Eutelsat and NSSLGlobal Power UK Government Operations with OneWeb LEO Connectivity

Prime Highlights

  • Eutelsat and NSSLGlobal will provide secure low-latency LEO satellite connectivity for UK government operations worldwide.
  • The deal enhances national defence, diplomacy, and disaster relief with secure space communications.

Key Facts

  • The UK invested €163.3 million in Eutelsat to buy a 10.89% stake and a “golden share” in the satellite group.
  • Eutelsat OneWeb constellation is comprised of over 600 LEO satellites, building the world’s first hybrid GEO-LEO satellite network.

Key Background

Eutelsat Group entered a record contract to offer Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity to support UK government activities around the globe. The contract, distributed through NSSLGlobal and FCDO Services, is designed to facilitate safe, high-speed, and low-latency communications for the UK’s most critical diplomatic, defense, policing, and humanitarian missions in far-flung and hostile environments.

In this configuration, NSSLGlobal will provide a complete managed service that incorporates OneWeb’s LEO satellite terminals with existing UK government infrastructure. The terminals will be particularly valuable in climate emergency regions such as the Caribbean, where hurricane preparedness and rapid response are particularly crucial.

The greatest advantage of the service is high-performance connectivity support without dependence on ground infrastructure to provide communications by British embassies, consulates, and field staff cut-off-free. This will be essential in providing information continuity in the case of crisis or foreign crisis situations.

The purchase is in line with British investment in Eutelsat one year ago for €163.3 million, where it reenacted its strategic role with the satellite industry. Britain has reaffirmed itself as the dominant force through the acquisition of a 10.89% equity stake as well as special governance rights like a “golden share.” Britain thereby consolidated its grip on Eutelsat’s future. An action like this is in line with national sovereign power, resilience, and space innovation goals.

Since its 2023 acquisition of OneWeb, the Eutelsat Group owns and manages a hybrid LEO-GEO constellation of over 600 LEO and 34 GEO satellites. Its cutting-edge design makes the company a global leader in future-proofed satellite connectivity for governments and maritime, enterprise, and humanitarian markets.

The agreement also secures the UK as a leader in secure satellite communications, delivering tough and resilient digital infrastructure to support government services—anywhere, anytime.
