Key Background:
North Myanmar border regions and northern Thailand were subjected to more than 15 earthquakes within the period between 12:34 AM to 9:46 AM of April 20th, 2025, reported by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). They were largely found in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and neighboring regions in Myanmar. The strongest of them was 3.3-magnitude at 1:41 AM with Myanmar having coordinates 21.732°N and 96.118°E as its location.
There were several other quakes recorded with over a magnitude of 2.5, including a 3.0 at 5:14 and a 2.7-magnitude at 9:46, both slipping into Myanmar. Thailand also had a few minute quakes recorded among which were a 1.9-magnitude one in Chiang Mai’s Samoeng district and a between 1.6 to 2.3 in magnitude quakes in Mae Hong Son’s Pai district.
Though such activity is anticipated, no immediate harm or public effect has been experienced. Yet the TMD is on alert because earthquakes grouping in a short time may indicate that fault lines are realigning in the area.
Individuals in the northern parts, especially in fault line areas, are advised to remain safe with official warning by the TMD. The department monitors seismic activity for the benefit of hazard assessment and public safety.
