Meta Establishes “Superintelligence Labs” to Drive the World Towards Human-Level AI

Meta’s newly established Superintelligence Labs represents a clear pivot in the company’s AI efforts. Although it has been active in AI research for years through efforts such as FAIR and the LLaMA model line, this new lab represents a wholesale move toward creating superintelligent AI—AI systems that surpass humans in reasoning, learning, and problem-solving.

This ambitious new team is being spearheaded by two of the tech world’s most influential leaders: Alexandr Wang, Scale AI founder, and Nat Friedman, ex-GitHub CEO. Their vision embodies Meta’s commitment to competing at the highest level in the global competition for artificial intelligence. Meta has consolidated all its large-scale AI development work—research, model training, infrastructure, and applications—under this new team.

To speed up progress, Meta has invested over $14 billion in AI infrastructure and hiring. That includes its recent investment in compute capacity and data labeling as well as generous compensation packages to top researchers from other companies such as OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic. The offers are reportedly ranging into nine figures and are among the highest-paid in the industry.

Mark Zuckerberg himself has supported this effort, placing Superintelligence Labs at the heart of Meta’s long-term strategy. According to him, the company is uniquely positioned to fuel this revolution with its large-scale platforms, open-source contributions history, and enormous computational power.

Yet, the project also poses challenges and cynicism. Internally, not all Meta’s AI leaders share the objective of scaling towards superintelligence. Some, such as Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun, feel that other solutions must be developed and warn against concentration on scale alone. Additionally, Meta has of late experienced setbacks, such as slippages in the deployment of new models and disappointing performance of LLaMA 4.

In spite of the danger, creation of Superintelligence Labs has excited investors and established Meta as a leader in the development of Artificial General Intelligence. It would transform AI-driven products and redefine humans’ relationship with machines in everyday life if it succeeds.
